Current examination methods require an otoscope and its speculums in multiple sizes for the ear, whereas nose exam implies use of a cumbersome rhinoscope set-up of head mirror, external light and handheld speculum, most of these items requiring sterilisation and hence owning many of them.

Non ENT specialists frequently struggle with nasal examination as they usually are forced to use the otoscope with an expensive nose adapter, which does not allow expansion of the nasal passages. This limits the types of nasal conditions that can be diagnosed or treated by non specialist doctors.

Olberon have designed a dual purpose handheld device, Otorhinoscope™, with a single use expandable and disposable speculum, both for ear and nasal passages, as required in order to conduct ear and nose examination and diagnose conditions. It replaces the requirement for a separate otoscope and rhinoscope.

The Otorhinoscope™ operates by a novel mechanism that enables the speculum to expand the ear canal or the nasal passages. This ear or nasal exam procedure can be carried out with the thumb of the hand holding the handle of the speculum, leaving the second hand free to carry out other procedures.

The expandable speculum also allows combined use with instrumentation (e.g. to withdraw foreign bodies or to administer medication).
